The Emigrant – Afzelia Lay – 15.5 x 3 x 2.75 - Cut from the same
piece of wood as the Immigrant (2004) which is in the collection of the
Mobile Museum of Art. Because that spoon went directly to the museum I
thought I would carve a variation to exhibit at shows. This one has one
additional flute on the back. The feet separate and the manner in which
the handle connects to the bowl is altered. The bowl is also deeper.
Note: This spoon will be on exhibit at Blue Spiral 1, a wonderful
gallery
in Ashville, NC until September
30, 2011. The exhibition is entitled Wood
Moving Forward and includes the work of 14 wood artists from the
Southeast.
